Spring into Healthier Hair

Tired, stressed-out tresses? Wintertime can wreak havoc on your strands, making them dry, frizzy, static-prone, and more likely to break. Unfortunately, many styling products and heat tools only make the problem worse, leaving hair extra thirsty for moisture. Now that spring is just around the corner, it’s time to give your hair the TLC that it has been craving and get a head start on looking fresh and ready for summer.

Benefits of Argan Oil

Products with argan oil can rescue your hair from winter’s effects.  Argan oil is high in nourishing nutrients and fatty acids and is an excellent choice for taming frizz and treating split ends.  One of our favorites is the MoroccanOil hair and skin care line.  We’ve used the restorative mask to rescue even the most dry and damaged hair.  And it smells divine!  We also love the U Luxury Argan Oil in the Unite hair care line. Hair becomes shiny, soft, and manageable.

Benefits of Coconut Oil

Another great option is coconut oil. The oil’s small molecular structure makes it good for penetrating each strand deeply and counteracting the effects of styling and heat products. Tips and Tricks for Making your own Masks at Home

You also probably already have other items in your kitchen that will do the trick. Any coconut oil that is unrefined, cold pressed, and preferably organic will work. Just gently melt a couple of spoonfuls and begin by applying to the ends and working mid-way up the length of your hair. Let sit for 2 hours (or longer!) and afterward, shampoo as usual.

Olive oil can condition and create incredible shine. Use it alone or combine it with other items in your kitchen for even better repairing effects.  Honey is a natural humectant, so it attracts moisture, making it an excellent choice for dry hair.  Combine four tablespoons of a quality cold-pressed olive oil with two tablespoons of honey. Heat the olive oil slightly on the stove (avoid heating it too hot or in the microwave to make sure you retain the oil’s beneficial properties). Then add the honey and mix well.  Focus on your ends, working half-way up the length of your hair.  Use a shower cap to cover your hair and allow to sit for at least 20 minutes but up to 2 hours.  Shampoo afterward.

You can also combine half an avocado, half a banana, and an egg (or any combination of the three) with two tablespoons of room temperature olive oil to provide your hair with healthy fats and protein to strengthen hair and help make it more manageable. Just make sure to puree the avocado and banana completely and beat the egg well before combining with the olive oil.  Apply to dry hair and let sit for 15-30 minutes. Rinse well with cool water only (especially if you include egg!!) and then wash as usual.

 

With any of these homemade masks, you may need to wash your hair twice.  But with regular use of self-made or salon hair masks and quality hair care products that moisturize and strengthen your hair, wintertime’s harmful effects will be tamed. It’s time to get ready for looking your summer best!
